postcard from balboa park

i grew up reading about faraway fantasy places: as a kid I loved the Magic Tree House books, then eventually became enamored by the harry potter series & all of its captivating whimsy.

some of my favorite quotes have to do with living a life that is enchanting and exhilarating, like this one from Roald Dahl, “Above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.”

Then I went to California, and no book, quote or movie could have prepared me for the sheer MAGIC that lies in San Diego’s Balboa Park.

Walking from my Airbnb to Balboa Park was just about 6 blocks of hills and blinding sunshine, and I arrived at the park already a little sweaty and sunburnt. I picked up a map at the entrance but mostly stuck to exploring whatever caught my eye in the moment — from museums to fountains to musical performances to seemingly endless gardens of cacti, there was plenty to see. If I lived in San Diego, I optimistically think I would like to spend a lot of time here seeing shows, learning up on some of the art & culture inside the museums and simply enjoying the flowers. It was a peaceful little (or not-so-little) refuge right in the middle of the city.

Have you ever been to Balboa Park?

Although I’ve been to San Diego (briefly) I have never been to Balboa Park. It looks like a great place to wile away some time. My kids would love it there.

Balboa Park was my favorite part of my San Diego trip. I could spend an entire week exploring it. My best friend will soon call the city home, so I look forward to going back!
